The Self-employed Persons Program offers a pathway for individuals to obtain permanent immigration status in Canada as self-employed individuals.

Overview

The Federal Self-Employed Persons class is geared towards applicants who intend and have the ability to become self-employed in Canada while making a significant contribution to the cultural, artistic or athletic life of Canada.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this program, you must meet the following criteria:

Relevant experience must involve at least two years of activity within the five-year period leading up to your application, and you may earn additional points if you have three, four, or five years of experience. This experience can be acquired through self-employment in cultural activities or athletics, or through participation at a world-class level in cultural activities or athletics

The applicants must demonstrate the skills, experience, and attributes necessary to successfully operate a business or engage in self-employed activities. For example, present a well-structured business plan outlining the proposed self-employment, market insights, and significant contributions to the cultural or athletic community. Demonstrate the financial capacity to support oneself and dependents during the initial stages of self-employment. Show an ability to adapt to the Canadian cultural or athletic scene and provide innovative contributions.

  • Have a minimum of one year of skilled work experience in Canada in the three years before applying.
  • Demonstrate adequate language proficiency.
  • There is no education requirement, but foreign educational credentials can be assessed for additional points.
  • Be admissible to Canada.
  • Plan to live outside Quebec.
  • Provincial nominees must settle in the province or territory that nominated them.
  • Ineligibility for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) includes refugee claimants, unauthorized work, or work experience obtained without temporary resident status, with an exemption for foreign national physicians who can count certain medical service experience as Canadian work experience.
