Study Permit

A study permit is an authorization to legally study in Canada for a given amount of time. This permit frequently serves as a pivotal stepping stone toward securing permanent residency status in the country.

Overview

Anybody planning to study in Canada for a period longer than 6 months needs to obtain a study permit. If you are considering applying for permanent residence, it is necessary to choose your study program wisely. To increase your chances of getting permanent residency in Canada, we recommend registering for a program of longer duration than one year. Stay away from poor-quality private institutions and instead enroll at a recognized public institution.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a study permit in Canada, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must have received acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. DLIs are recognized educational institutions where international students can pursue their studies.
  • You should demonstrate the ability to cover your tuition fees, living expenses, and a return flight ticket. This ensures that you can financially support yourself during your studies in Canada.
  • You must meet the criteria for admissibility to Canada. This includes passing a medical examination, obtaining a police clearance certificate if required, and not having a criminal record. Admissibility also considers factors like security concerns and health issues.
  • You should demonstrate an intention to leave Canada.

Most of the students are authorized to work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during academic breaks.

If the official length of your program of study is at least eight months, you may be eligible to apply for a Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) upon completing your studies. If your program is at least eight months but less than two years, you may be eligible for a PGWP valid for no longer than the length of your program. If your program is two years or more, you may be eligible for a PGWP valid for a maximum of three years.

Spouses and common-law partners of full-time students enrolled in an academic, vocational or trade program at an eligible post-secondary institution (all public schools and selected private schools) may apply for an open work permit valid for the length of the partner’s study program. They can also apply for an open work permit while their partner has PGWP and stable employment.
